Riedel's Law


Ever wonder what it takes to host a spectacularly successful wine tasting in your home? Me neither. But here it is the first Monday of June, and I'm over at Tim Atkin's blog with some helpful pointers. What about a Natural Wine themed tasting? You could rent a petting zoo and match the fecal matter aroma to the animal is most resembles? I love you!

I thought, for a change, I'd write an entire piece without making fun of "natural wine." But I like your idea, but instead of tasting them blind, you would taste them anosmic. (Man, I love that word).

loved it. and i am living proof of riedels law - i spend $1 on wine glasses at the goodwill, and i am so skinny that i don't have an ass.

Wow, that's skinny. So just where are your fingers?

I'm hoping that Riedel's Law becomes part of wine folklore. Cite it as often as possible. Just remember you heard it here first.

Ron, does this mean that I do not have to buy a separate glass for Syrah and Shiraz? Can I use the same glass for Pouilly Fume AND Sauv Blanc?

Some of my students in my wine class at the University of California-Irvine ACTUALLY asked those questions. OK, OK, it was an introductory class, but...

Did they ask these questions before or after your class, Love?

I made a terrible mistake and drank Syrah out of a Sauvignon Blanc glass. This would have been catastrophic, but I was having goat cheese, and so the wine glass was perfect. It's always best to select the glass to go with your food, then it doesn't matter what wine you put in it, it's a match!

Hey, I want to take one of your classes, Darling! I have this teacher fantasy...

You? On second read, as long as you selected the glass to go with the food,it works! But please don't let the Riedels know about that.

The wine consuming public (aka the
"masses") buys into every silly bit of wine info they hear. I tell my students (early on), buy inexpensive glasses at Cost Plus or Pottery Barn, because the more expensive the glass the faster you will break it and you HONESTLY don't need a different glass for every variety.

But it would be great for you to be my student, big boy! Alternatively, I could be YOUR student...

This just in! According to Becky Sue Epstein (?) writing in Tasting Panel mag, the Riedel Malbec glass has just arrived! I kid you not.

She sez: "The Riedel Malbec glass was developed in association with Argentine producer Graffigna."

The Oregon pinot noir glass is a foot tall and holds 750 milliliters. It's like drinking out of a clown's wine glass
