That practice probably came about after someone noticed that a crummy wine had developed some sort of taste after a long time in wood. These days, the process seems to have been reversed...<br /><br />ML certainly is natural, as long as your wine's pH is above 3.2 and your acids fit the profile. Of course, it isn't fun if it naturally takes place in the bottle, but that's another story. In any case, why do winemakers induce ML in wines that aren't going to go in that direction on their own?
